The Siberian Husky is a Nordic sled dog. It is an alert, friendly, and spirited dog that loves to be outdoors and needs a lot of exercises.
Origin and history
The Siberian Husky was once an indispensable companion for the native people of Siberia, who used the Husky as a hunting, herding, and sled dog. With Russian fur traders, the husky made its way to Alaska, where people quickly became aware of the small sled dogs because of their amazing speed in sled dog races. In 1910 the Siberian Husky began to be bred in Alaska.
Appearance
The Siberian Husky is a medium-sized dog with an elegant, almost delicate build. The dense fur pointed ears that stand up and the bushy tail indicates its Nordic origins.
The Siberian Husky’s coat consists of a dense and fine undercoat and a water-repellent, straight top coat, which appears thick and furry due to the supportive undercoat. The two layers of fur provide optimal thermal insulation. Thus, the Siberian Husky is optimally adapted for polar regions and does not tolerate hot climates well.
The Siberian Husky is bred in all colors from black to pure white. The striking color patterns and markings on the head are particularly typical of the breed. Equally characteristic are the slightly slanted, almond-shaped eyes with their penetrating, almost mischievous look. The eyes can be blue or brown, although there are also huskies with one blue eye and one brown eye.
Nature
The Siberian Husky is a friendly, gentle and socially compatible, downright sociable dog. It is not suitable as a guard or protection dog. It is very spirited and docile, but also has a strong urge for freedom. Even with consistent training, it will always keep its head and never submit unconditionally.
The Siberian Husky is a sporty dog and needs work and exercise – preferably outdoors. It is a pronounced outdoor dog and therefore it should not be kept in an apartment or a big city. The Siberian Husky is not suitable for lazy people, but rather for sporty and active nature types.
The coat of the Siberian Husky is relatively easy to care for, but it sheds a lot.
