Broholmer: Dog Breed Information

The Broholmer – also known as the old Danish mastiff – is a large, powerful mastiff-type dog that is rarely found outside of its country of origin, Denmark. He is a very good companion and guard dog but needs adequate living space to feel comfortable.

Origin and history

Originating in Denmark, the Broholmer goes back to medieval hunting dogs that were used specifically for hunting deer. Later they were also used as guard dogs for large estates. Only towards the end of the 18th century was this dog breed purebred. The name comes from Broholm Castle, where the breeding of dogs began. After World War II, this old Danish dog breed almost died out. Since 1975, however, it has been bred back according to the old model under strict conditions.

Appearance

The Broholmer is a very large and powerful dog with short, close-lying hair and a thick undercoat. In terms of physique, it lies somewhere between the Great Dane and the Mastiff. The head is massive and broad, and the neck is strong and covered with somewhat loose skin. The ears are medium-sized and hanging.

It is bred in the colors yellow – with a black mask – red or black. White markings on the chest, paws, and tip of the tail are possible. The dense fur is easy to care for but sheds profusely.

Nature

The Broholmer has a good-natured, calm, and friendly nature. He is alert without being aggressive. He needs to be raised with loving consistency and needs clear leadership. Excessive severity and unnecessary drills will not get you very far with the Broholmer. Then he becomes more stubborn and goes his way.

The large, powerful dog needs plenty of living space and close family ties. He is hardly suitable as a city dog ​​or apartment dog.
