The Tyrolean Hound is a medium-sized hunting dog with an excellent sense of smell and direction. Tyrolean Hounds are only given to professional hunters or foresters to ensure that the passionate hunters receive training that is appropriate to their abilities and skills and is guided for hunting.

Origin and history

The Tyrolean Hound is a descendant of the Celtic Hound and the Wildbodenhunds that were widespread in the Alps. As early as 1500, Emperor Maximilian used these noble hoofs for hunting. Around 1860 the attraction of the breed began in Tyrol. The first breed standard was defined in 1896 and officially recognized in 1908. Of the many Bracken breeds that were once at home in Tyrol, only the red and black-red breeds have survived.

Appearance

The Tyrolean Hound is a medium-sized dog with a strong, sturdy body that is slightly longer than it is tall. She has dark brown eyes and wide, high-set hanging ears. The tail is long, set high, and carried high when excited.

The coat color of the Tyrolean Hound can be red or black-red. The black and red coat (saddle) is black and the legs, chest, belly, and head have tan fur. Both color variants can also have white markings on the neck, chest, paws, or legs (bracken star). The fur is dense, rather coarse than fine, and has an undercoat.

Nature

The Tyrolean Hound is an ideal, robust hunting dog for hunting in the forest and the mountains. The breed standard describes the Tyrolean Hound as a strong-willed, passionate, and fine-nosed dog that hunts persistently and has a pronounced will to track and a sense of direction. The Tyrolean Hound is used as a single hunter before the shot and as a tracking hound after the shot. They work according to the sound of tracks (tracking sound), i.e. they signal to the hunter through continuous vocalization where the game is fleeing or where it is. Tyrolean hounds are mainly used for hunting small game, especially hares and foxes.

Keeping the Tyrolean Hound is uncomplicated – provided, of course, that it is encouraged according to its natural abilities and used as a hunting dog. With consistent upbringing and hunting training, the Tyrolean Hound willingly subordinates itself. It is an ideal companion for hunters who want to keep their dogs in the family and take them with them everywhere. The care of the dense, weatherproof stick hair is also uncomplicated.
