Garlic: What You Should Know

Garlic is a plant that belongs to the leek. Onions grow on it. The individual parts in there are called toes. The cloves, or the juice from them, are used as a spice in the kitchen. Some people also believe that garlic can heal people.

Garlic originally comes from central Asia. Today, however, he is known all over the world. It grows well in mild climates, i.e. where it is neither too hot nor too cold. Four-fifths of the world’s garlic is now grown in China: 20 million tons every year.

The plants are herbaceous and can grow 30 to 90 centimeters high. There are up to twenty cloves in a garlic bulb. If you stick such cloves back into the ground, a new plant can grow out of them.

The juice from garlic cloves has a sharp taste, similar to that of onions. You can also make vinegar from crushed garlic. Some people don’t like garlic that much because of the smell, some even get an allergy.

What are the effects of garlic?

Even in ancient times, it was believed that garlic could also be used for healing. The Romans, for example, believed that it was good for the muscles. That’s why gladiators ate it. Today it is believed that garlic can lower blood pressure and reduce blood clotting. It is also said to cleanse the intestines. However, fresh garlic can be toxic to dogs and cats.

It was also believed that garlic kept away evil spirits such as demons. You know that from stories about werewolves and vampires. Some religions are against garlic because people find it too tasty or it makes them angry. For example, Muslims should not eat raw garlic before going to the mosque.
