Origin of the Sloughi

The Sloughi originally descended from the greyhounds of the North African Bedouins. Thus, its history goes back several millennia.

At that time he was a faithful companion of the desert dwellers and helped, among other things, with the hunt, in which he formed a team of three with a falcon and the hunter, who rode on a horse. To be precise, the breed originated in the Maghreb region, which includes modern-day Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia.

Since the Sloughi was able to hunt game due to its speed and thus provide meat for the Bedouins, it was considered “pure” in Arabic culture in contrast to other dogs. Even today, the greyhound breed enjoys great popularity in countries such as Marroko, although traditional hunting is very rarely practiced.
