5 Signs Your Cat Is Happy

How do you know if your cat is really happy? These five signs will tell you. Point 2 is particularly cute!

A cozy place, delicious food, and a lot of stroking – anyone who takes a cat into their home usually does a lot to make the furry friend feel completely at ease.

But especially animal lovers who own a velvet paw for the first time are often unsure: How can I tell that my cat is really happy? We’ve collected the top five signs of true feline happiness!

Purring from the cat’s soul

Almost everyone knows this characteristic: if the cat is happy, it often shows it with a satisfied purr. You will most likely notice this purring noise if you scratch your cat extensively in its favorite spots.

But your cat can also comment on the opening of the cat food can with a gentle purr. Some kitties are so happy they even hum softly when they fall asleep.

Whether the purr is always clearly audible depends on the anatomy of the larynx. Some cats can make a really loud purr, while others can barely hear it.

Tip: When cuddling, feel your cat very carefully along its throat. If you feel a gentle vibration, you have a quiet purr at home, but it is no less happy than the louder “buzzer”.

Give brains

Surely you have already experienced that your cat came towards you on the table or the edge of the sofa and gave you a more or less strong nudge with its forehead.

This “giving your head” is also a sign that a cat is very happy. And: This happiness is closely linked to you as a master or mistress. Because if your four-legged friend rubs his head against you, you will be marked with scents that are supposed to tell other animals: Hands off, this is my human!

This behavior indicates great love and also that the bond with the cat is good.

Belly up

Cats are the descendants of wild big cats that would never show their bellies in nature. The supine position exposes the throat and heart and is extremely dangerous in the wild.

However, if your cat presents itself like this on the sofa, bed, or floor, it also means that it is happy. She feels so safe with you that she can loll around with confidence even in this vulnerable position.

The Milk Kick

When a cat is happy, it loves to rhythmically step its legs up and down its blanket or favorite human. This can happen while standing, but also when the cat is already snuggled up to you. Some cats even suck on their people’s clothing with a pleasurable smacking sound.

This behavior is called the milk kick, which kittens use to stimulate the flow of milk from their mother’s teats.  In concrete terms, this means for you: Your cat is as happy with you as it was with its mom.

Gambling is happiness

Only a happy furry friend plays. Incidentally, this applies to all ages: for kittens who are just a few weeks old as well as for old cats.

So don’t roll your eyes when your cat chases his ball through the apartment in the middle of the night. It just shows that your little companion is genuinely happy.
