English Springer Spaniel

In England, the English Springer Spaniel has long been one of the most popular breeds in the country. Find out everything about the behavior, character, activity and exercise needs, education, and care of the dog breed English Springer Spaniel in the profile.

The English Springer Spaniel is believed to be the oldest of the Gundog breeds and has evolved over several centuries. Roman conquerors are believed to have introduced the ancestors of the English Springer Spaniel to Britain, where they were crossed with local dogs. A brown-red fur is considered to be the original color. Today’s breed standard was set by the first Spaniel Club in England in 1885.

General Appearance

The physique of the medium-sized English Springer Spaniel is symmetrical, compact, and strong. The long, typical spaniel ears are characteristic of him. He has the longest legs of any British land spaniel. The fur is silky and slightly wavy. Although all spaniel colors are acceptable, preference is given to white with liver or black markings.

Behavior and temperament

Even if he usually looks so innocent that one would like to cuddle him all day long: the English Springer Spaniel has no interest in being “everybody’s darling”. He is looking for great love in the form of a reference person. He will adore them, but he also gets along wonderfully with the rest of the “pack” thanks to his firm, good-natured character and his proverbial love of children. Overall, these dogs have friendly, happy, very lively personalities, and are usually never aggressive or nervous.

Need for employment and physical activity

The Springer Spaniel loves to be able to move freely in the field and forest. Its original purpose was to find and hunt down the game when hunting with a net, falcon, or greyhound. Today it is used as a companion by hunters to find the game and retrieve it after the shot. If you want to keep your spaniel species-appropriate, you should give it a lot of exercises as well as a task. So it makes sense, among other things, to teach him how to fetch. You should also make sure that the spaniel often gets the opportunity to go swimming when going for walks together because he loves water.

Upbringing

His pronounced stubbornness, unconditional consistency, and empathy are the key to a successful upbringing. Above all, its pronounced hunting instinct can pose major problems for owners. If the spaniel is kept as a family dog, you should think about alternatives to hunting training at an early stage. Search and retrieval work is recommended.

Maintenance

Because of the longer fur, the lively four-legged friend should be brushed every day. Of course, the lop ears also require constant care and control.

Disease Susceptibility / Common Diseases

Genetic diseases such as PRA (retinal disease) and fucosidosis are rare, so choose breeders carefully.
