Entlebucher Sennenhund

If you meet a young Entlebucher with a short tail, this is probably no reason to get excited, despite the ban on docking in Germany: around ten percent of puppies are born with a congenital bobtail. Find out everything about behavior, character, activity and exercise needs, training, and care of the dog breed Entlebucher Sennenhund in the profile.

It owes its name to the Entlebuch, a valley in the cantons of Lucerne and Bern, from which it is said to originally come. The Entlebucher once served as a drover and guard dog. The first description of this breed dates back to 1889. However, the first standard was only established in 1927. A year earlier, the Swiss Club for Entlebuch Mountain Dogs had been founded, which took on the pure breeding and promotion of the breed.

General Appearance

The Entlebucher is tricolored like all Swiss Mountain Dogs and the smallest of the four Mountain Dog breeds (Appenzell, Bernese, and Greater Swiss Mountain Dog). The fur is short and firm. The pretty hanging ears and the powerful head are also typical of the breed.

Behavior and temperament

The Entlebucher is a loyal friend to both adults and children, and its whole nature is designed to please its human pack. He is also lively, fearless, good-natured and affectionate with familiar people, and slightly suspicious of strangers. All in all, a balanced dog with a strong character can be used in many different ways.

Need for employment and physical activity

The dog is extremely lively and agile and needs to be allowed to let off steam at least once a day. Since he is also very intelligent and agile, he is ideal for a wide variety of dog sports. But also search games or tracking training are great fun for the dog. It is also a good choice as a companion for sporty people.

Upbringing

He learns playfully and quickly, with correct training he has little inclination to dominant behavior. However, his lively temperament means that he needs to be socialized at an early age and that clear boundary are set for him from the start. Here it is important to run a consistent, but not too hard school with a lot of sensitivity, because the Entlebucher is a real sensitive little one, and you must not shake his trust with unnecessary harshness. Not necessarily a task for beginners.

Maintenance

The Entlebucher has a short coat that is easy to care for and should only be brushed from time to time. On the other hand, the eyes and ears should be checked and cleaned regularly.

Disease Susceptibility / Common Diseases

Although the Entlebucher is not a large dog, hip dysplasia does occur in them. Eye diseases such as cataracts are also said to occur more frequently in this breed.
