The Chinese dog breed, the Chow Chow, is world famous for two things: its fluffy lion’s mane and its legendary stubbornness. However, if you know what to look out for with the brush and training, they are great companions throughout life.

#1 He is probably descended from the Nordic peaks, his ancestor probably came to China via Russian Siberia and Mongolia, where the breed was bred as a versatile working dog.

#2 Unlike the prized palace dogs, the Pekingese or Shih Tzu, however, the Chow Chow was a commoner dog, an important working animal particularly in the cold northern regions of China, where it was used as a sled dog, herding dog, and hunting dog.

#3 In China, the breed is also known as sōngshīquǎn (鬆獅犬 – “puffed up lion dog”) or hēishé (黑舌 – “blue tongue”).
