The Bull Terrier originated in England in the early 19th century. The goal at the time was primarily to breed more agile animals for the dog fights that were very popular in Britain at the time. That being said, the Bull Terrier was intended to be used for hunting badgers and killing rats.
For this purpose, classic bulldogs were crossed with Dalmatians and Old White English Terriers, which is sometimes still reflected in the differences in appearance within the breed.
