James Hinks, a pet dealer from Birmingham, who dedicated himself to the development of the Bull Terrier around the year 1850, probably started with the targeted breeding according to a uniform breed standard.
After dogfighting was banned in England in 1835, the bull terrier became a popular family dog among the lower class, being kept among other things as a guard dog and for hunting vermin.
This was partly due to the fact that the animals had strong nerves and were friendly to people at the same time so that they could be kept in a confined space with many people. Accordingly, when breeding the Bull Terrier, care was taken early on not to use overly aggressive dogs.
