10 Interesting Facts About German Longhaired Pointers You Probably Didn’t Know

#7 The German Longhaired Pointer is a strong, muscular dog with flowing lines, but not overly bulky or ponderous.

The shoulder must be higher than the croup, it should not be overbuilt at the back. The noble, elongated head has a muzzle that is the same length as the skull, the large, wavy hairy ears are turned slightly forward and the eyes are brown to dark brown. The tail should be carried straight, the last third should curve slightly upwards. As a hunting dog, the German Longhaired Pointer has expansive movements and a good drive.

#8 The coat of fur should not be too short, but it shouldn’t get out of hand either: it should be simple, dense and firm with a good undercoat and may vary from smooth to wavy hair.

The hair on the back and sides of the body should be about 3-5 cm long and lie flat, the belly, the back of the legs, and the tail may be longer or feathered. The hair on the head is quite short, but not as short as the German Shorthaired Pointer. Permitted colors are brown, with or without a combination of white and/or mold (dark roan, light roan, trout roan). The long coat should be brushed regularly and trimmed of leaves, tangles, and other debris with a metal comb. Baths should only be taken as seldom as possible, after which the German Longhaired Pointer should be dried carefully.

#9 As working gun dogs that must pass a rigorous series of tests to be approved for breeding, the German Longhaired Pointer is generally of excellent health, endurance and constitution.

There are no known breed-specific medical conditions or specific dietary guidelines.
