As necessary as regular cleaning maybe for a clean household, household cleaners can pose a danger to furry friends if they come into contact with them. But what should you do in an emergency, i.e. if the dog has drunk cleaning products? We have summarized the most important tips for first aid and prevention.
Even if reports of death from a certain brand of cleaning wipes turned out to be false a few years ago, cleaning products can still be very dangerous for our four-legged friends. Many of their ingredients are caustic or toxic. Sometimes both. If a dog drank or ate cleaning products, the consequences could be tragic.
“Organic Cleaning Products”: Danger for Dogs?
The use of organic cleaners is also not completely harmless! They also contain surfactants as active cleaning substances that bind fats to water and thus achieve the cleaning effect. The term “organic” only refers to the degradability of the cleaning agent. Surfactants are nevertheless irritating and harmful to the mucous membranes of humans and animals. In extreme cases, there is a risk of local irritation or even chemical burns to the eyes, nose, mucous membranes, tongue, throat, or mouth.
Dilute Cleaning Agent Accordingly
But nobody needs to panic when wiping the floor. If the cleaning agent is properly diluted, even licking the wet floor should not harm the dog. However, it becomes dangerous when the four-legged darling grabs a cleaning agent’s bottle and bites it open or an open bottle falls over, the agent runs out and the dog licks it up.
The dose at which a cleaning agent becomes toxic depends on the agent itself, the size, age, and health of the dog.
