What is Scabies in Dogs?
Scabies in dogs, also known as sarcoptic mange, is a highly contagious skin disease caused by a microscopic mite called Sarcoptes scabiei. This parasite burrows into the skin of dogs, causing intense itching and irritation. Scabies can be transmitted from dog to dog through direct contact or sharing bedding or grooming tools. While any dog can contract scabies, those with weakened immune systems or living in crowded or unsanitary conditions are more susceptible.
Understanding the Causes of Scabies
The Sarcoptes scabiei mite is the primary cause of scabies in dogs. These mites burrow into the skin of dogs and lay eggs, which hatch and continue the cycle. Scabies is highly contagious and can easily be passed from one dog to another through direct contact or sharing of bedding, toys, or grooming tools. Dogs with compromised immune systems or those living in crowded or unsanitary conditions are at higher risk for contracting scabies.
Symptoms of Scabies in Dogs
The symptoms of scabies in dogs are primarily skin-related and can vary in severity. The most common symptom is intense itching and scratching, which can lead to hair loss, scabs, and open sores. Other symptoms may include redness, inflammation, and flaky or scaly skin.
