Donkeys in Ancient Mythology: From Egypt to Greece
Donkeys have been a part of ancient mythology since the earliest civilizations. In Egypt, the god Set was often depicted as riding a donkey, while in Greece, the god Dionysus was said to have invented the donkey. The story goes that he was so pleased with his invention that he granted the donkey the gift of immortality. In Greek mythology, donkeys were also associated with the god of wine, fertility, and theater, as well as with the god of wealth and commerce, Hermes, who was often depicted carrying a donkey on his shoulders. In Roman mythology, donkeys were associated with the goddess of agriculture, Ceres, and were often used to plow fields.
