Therefore, understanding these differences is crucial for anyone who wants to adopt or buy a shepherd.
Genetic Differences: Origins and Breeding
German Shepherds originated in Germany in the late 19th century, where they were bred as herding and guarding dogs. They were developed from a variety of shepherd breeds, including the German, Dutch, and Belgian Shepherds. On the other hand, American Shepherds are a relatively new breed that was created in the United States in the 20th century by mixing various shepherd breeds, including the Australian Shepherd, Border Collie, and English Shepherd. Consequently, German Shepherds have a more uniform appearance and temperament, while American Shepherds have a wider range of colors and sizes. Additionally, German Shepherds are recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) and the Federation Cynologique Internationale (FCI), whereas American Shepherds are recognized only by the United Kennel Club (UKC).
