Unfortunately, the gray nurse shark population has been in decline for decades, and it is now considered a critically endangered species.
There are many factors that have contributed to the decline of the gray nurse shark population. Overfishing, habitat destruction, climate change, pollution, inbreeding, lack of protection, and hunting are some of the main causes. Overfishing and the Gray Nurse Shark
Overfishing is one of the main reasons why the gray nurse shark population has declined so drastically. The overfishing of gray nurse sharks has led to a significant reduction in their numbers, and it is estimated that the population has declined by over 80% in some areas.
Furthermore, gray nurse sharks have a low reproductive rate, which makes them particularly vulnerable to overfishing. These sharks have a gestation period of up to 9 months and typically give birth to only 1 or 2 pups at a time. This slow reproductive rate means that it takes a long time for the population to recover from overfishing. As a result, many populations of gray nurse sharks have been depleted to the point where they are no longer viable.
