Normal Puppy Urination Habits
Puppies have small bladders and require frequent trips outside to urinate. As a general rule, puppies can hold their bladder for one hour per month of age, up to about 8 hours. During the day, puppies should be taken outside every 2-3 hours to urinate, and more frequently if they are drinking water or have just eaten. Puppies typically need to urinate after waking up, after playing, and after eating or drinking.
Different Types of Urination
There are several different types of urination that puppies may experience. In addition to normal urination, puppies may experience submissive urination, excitement urination, or stress-related urination. Submissive urination occurs when a puppy is trying to show submission to a more dominant individual and may result in dribbling or leaking urine. Excitement urination is characterized by urination during moments of excitement, such as when greeting new people or playing. Stress-related urination can occur in response to fear, anxiety, or other stressful situations and may cause the puppy to urinate while sleeping.
