With its curly fur and extremely affectionate nature, the Ural Rex is becoming increasingly popular in Germany. She sheds little fur and gets along very well with children. Find out more about the appearance, character, and origin of this special cat breed here.

Look

The most striking feature of the Ural Rex is primarily its fur. The undercoat is medium long, fine, very soft, and dense at the same time. It covers the entire body in loose waves or curls. They come in short-haired and long-haired versions. The elasticity of the wave is also striking. She is of medium height, relatively short, and has a muscular to lean physique. The head is short with a broad equilateral wedge and prominent cheekbones. The snout is also somewhat wider with a strong lower jaw. The medium-sized ears with rounded tips are set high on the head. The eyes are large, oval, and slanted. Their color harmoniously matches the coat color.

The Temperament Of The Ural Rex

Ural Rex is an extremely social, sociable, intelligent, and charming cat. They love contact with people and seek closeness to them. The Ural Rex also gets along very well with children and even dogs of all sizes are accepted by the cuddly cats. She is not a loud cat and draws more attention to herself with a delicate little voice. The playful Ural Rex should not be kept alone as they are constantly looking for tenderness.

Caring For The Ural Rex

The Ural Rex is easy to care for. She hardly sheds hair, only dead hair can be found in the sleeping places. The coat of the short-haired Ural Rex is best cared for with a soft natural hair bust or supple suede. Dead hair can be easily removed with a damp hand. A side effect – the fur shows up again in beautiful waves or dense curls.

The semi-long-haired variant requires a little more care. More frequent combing is necessary when changing the coat.

Disease Susceptibility

No specific diseases are known to date. With the curly coat, however, fleas and the like can easily nest. Like any other breed, it can also contract infectious diseases. In order for the cat to remain healthy, it must be vaccinated against cat flu and cat disease every year.

Origin And History

The Ural Rex is native to the Ural Mountains in Siberia. There it was observed for the first time in the middle of the 20th century because of its strange coat structure. It was only later, in the late 1980s, that attention was drawn to the strange, curly-haired cat. In Zarechny, the domestic cat “Murra” gave birth to three kittens, two of which had the curly coat structure. One of them was given the name “Wassily”. He is considered the grandfather of all Ural Rex cats.

In order to rule out genetic defects, the classic inbreeding program was used. It was found that the Rex gene of the Ural Rex is inherited recessively and is not compatible with the other Rex genes. The Ural Rex has been a recognized breed by the WCF since 2006.

Did You Know?

The Ural Rex is a very young and natural breed. She is even the youngest of all known and registered Rex cats. In the meantime, there are also clubs in Germany that present and award prizes for the still very few pedigree cats.
