Traveling With the Cat: Preparing for the Trip

Traveling isn’t necessarily a cat hobby, but sometimes there’s just no other way to arrange it: the velvet paw comes with you on vacation. You should make extensive preparations to make it as pleasant as possible for everyone involved so that the drive doesn’t become a relaxation killer.

Cats are anything but fond of travel. They prefer to explore their territory where they have everything under control. A car ride, on the other hand, is very stressful for the fur noses. If it has to be, then make it as comfortable as possible for your four-legged friend. You can prevent bankruptcies, bad luck, and hangovers during the trip with sufficient preparation.

Preliminary Check: Vaccination Card & Pet ID Card Available?

If you want to take your pet with you on vacation, first find out whether cats are allowed in your accommodation at the vacation spot. Once this basic requirement has been clarified, ask if there is a balcony and if it is secured. Will a litter box, scratching post or cat leash be provided? Once you have everything sorted out, check your cat’s papers for completeness. Vaccination cards and pet ID cards should be up to date. In an emergency, an external veterinarian must be able to see all the information.

Traveling By the Cat in the Car: Visit the Vet Beforehand

You should also introduce your cat to your veterinarian before the trip. He will inform you about possible travel illnesses in your pet and give you tips on which medicines should not be missing in your first-aid kit. Travel tablets help your cat, for example, in the event of sudden nausea or nervousness.

Get the Cat Used to the Transport Box

Last but not least, remember to get your darling used to the transport box in which he will spend the car journey in good time. Under no circumstances should your velvet paw associate the mini cage with anything negative. If you only use it to visit the vet, your furry friend will hardly visit the small accommodation voluntarily. To prevent this, make the box available as a place to sleep, for example. Familiar smells and objects calm cats. Bribes are also allowed: hide some treats in the box to make it more attractive to the furry friend.

Preparing for the Car Ride: This is a Must

Pack both kitten’s blanket or snuggle blanket and favorite toy. You can also put both in the transport box to give your velvet paw a safe, familiar environment. The food and water bowls from home also belong in the luggage, otherwise, Kitty will end up refusing to eat at the holiday destination. If your cat is regularly given medication, it goes without saying that these also belong in the cat’s luggage. If you travel in summer, remember to bring enough water and possibly wet towels, which can cool the air when it is very hot.
