The Speckled Trout, also known as the Spotted Seatrout or simply “Speck,” is a popular game fish found in coastal waters of the southeastern United States. It is a member of the drum family and can grow up to 3 feet in length and weigh up to 17 pounds. The Speckled Trout is a prized catch for anglers due to its elusive nature, challenging fight, and delicious taste.
Habitat and Range of Speckled Trout
Speckled Trout can be found in coastal waters from Virginia to Texas, with the largest populations in the Gulf of Mexico. They prefer shallow, brackish waters such as bays, estuaries, and flats with sandy or grassy bottoms. Speckled Trout are also known to inhabit deeper waters near channels and drop-offs. They are a highly adaptable species and can tolerate a wide range of salinity levels and temperatures. However, their populations have been negatively impacted by habitat loss and pollution in recent years.
