History of the Dorking Chicken Breed

The Dorking chicken is believed to have originated in the town of Dorking, in southern England, during the Roman occupation. The breed was initially used for cockfighting, but over time, its meat and eggs became more valuable, and it became popular for food production. Dorking chickens were introduced to the United States in the early 1800s and quickly became one of the most popular breeds of poultry. During World War II, the breed was threatened with extinction, but dedicated breeders managed to keep the breed alive, and it is still popular today. The American Poultry Association recognizes five color varieties of the Dorking chicken: White, Silver Gray, Dark, Red, and Cuckoo.
