Origins of the Sea Lamprey: Tracing Its Evolutionary History

Introduction: What Is the Sea Lamprey?

The sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) is a parasitic fish that belongs to the lamprey family Petromyzontidae. It is a primitive, jawless fish that has a unique life cycle, feeding habits, and migration pattern. The sea lamprey is a fascinating organism that has been studied for many years, and its evolutionary history has been traced back to the early Paleozoic era.

Fossil Record: Early Origins of Lampreys

The fossil record of lampreys dates back to the early Silurian period, approximately 450 million years ago. The oldest known fossil of a lamprey-like fish is the Mayomyzon pieckoensis, discovered in the Czech Republic. These early lampreys had a cartilaginous skeleton, lacked jaws, and had a primitive respiratory system. They were small, measuring only a few inches in length, and lived in freshwater environments.

During the Devonian period, lampreys evolved to become more adapted to marine environments. They developed a specialized sucking mouth that allowed them to attach to and feed on larger hosts, such as fish and marine mammals. The evolution of the sea lamprey’s parasitic lifestyle is believed to have contributed to the decline of many fish species during the late Devonian period.
