The Smooth Fox Terrier is a British breed. It was originally bred for fox hunting and was intended to track down foxes in their burrow and chase them out. The first breed standards were established in 1876, but it stands to reason that this breed existed several decades earlier.
The German Fox Terrier Association was founded in 1889. For a while, the fox terrier was an integral part of the English cityscape. Many fine ladies kept him as a companion dog. Due to the wrong attitude and the low employment, however, he was quickly considered snappy and short-tempered. Therefore, this breed is currently relatively rare.
