Dogs and cats don’t naturally get along perfectly, but that doesn’t mean you can’t keep them together. It is only important that you do not simply confront the dog with your velvet paw without preparation, but make sure that certain requirements are met.
Early Acquaintance
For harmonious coexistence, the dog must accept the cat as a member of the pack. This works best when both animals get used to each other in infancy. In this way, they get to know their different body language early on, so that misunderstandings are avoided – in most cases, the animals do not get into conflict with each other because of an innate antipathy, but simply because of communication problems. For example, cats read a dog’s friendly wagging of its tail as an annoyed or even angry gesture.
Cat-Friendly Dog Breeds
The coexistence of the two types of pets works particularly well if the dog is calm and balanced, and the cat is not nervous. Large dog breeds such as Saint Bernards, Labradors, or Newfoundlands are considered peaceful and are often also cat-friendly. Among the smaller dogs, for example, the friendly and not very aggressive Pug is suitable for keeping with other pets. Of course, with all breeds, it also depends on the individual nature of the dog and how well it gets along with the velvet paw in the house.
Spatial Requirements
There should be enough space so that the dog and cat can live together under one roof. A large apartment or house is a must. It is important to set up separate feeding stations. The litter box should be placed in such a way that the dog does not start digging or even eating the cat feces.
