Is the Chihuahua Good for Allergy Sufferers?

There is certainly no one dog that is absolutely and unrestrictedly suitable for allergy sufferers. Whether and to what extent a four-legged friend can trigger allergies depends on too many factors.

If you have never shown any symptoms before, but want to be sure whether you are allergic to animal hair, you can find out quickly with an allergy test from a dermatologist. If you know about your allergy but have fallen in love with a certain Chihuahua, you can have yourself tested specifically for this four-legged friend.

Incidentally, it is not the hair itself that people react to, but the allergy is caused by the saliva, sebum, or urine that adheres to this hair. It should also be noted that Chihuahuas shed year-round. During the molting season in spring and autumn, fur is shed again and the lost hair is distributed throughout the household.

General information on dog allergies:

  • Not every allergy sufferer reacts to every dog and every breed in the same way.
  • Females cause fewer allergies than males. Some people react to a protein in the prostate that is only produced in male dogs. Anyone who reacts to this with symptoms could be happy with a Chihuahua bitch and live symptom-free.
  • Allergy sufferers often react more severely to short-haired dogs. Luckily, the Chihuahua also comes in a long-haired version.
  • Air filters/purifiers in the room can alleviate symptoms.
  • Frequent vacuuming and mopping of floors are advisable to eliminate allergens.
  • Avoid dust collectors, decorative items, and unnecessary textiles in the household.
  • A washable imitation leather sofa is preferable to a fabric-covered sofa.
  • Tiles are ideal. Carpets, on the other hand, collect allergens.
  • If you are thorough when grooming your Chihuahua, you will have less dog hair in your home.
  • Clean all sleeping and lying places of the dog regularly. Choose (clean) washable materials.
  • Don’t allow the Chihuahua to sleep in your bed, or even ban it from the bedroom altogether.
  • There are medications that reduce allergy symptoms.
  • Ask the dermatologist about hyposensitization.
