The pig ear recall was prompted by reports of salmonella infections in both dogs and humans who had come into contact with contaminated pig ears. The CDC investigated several outbreaks of salmonella infections that were linked to pig ear treats, and identified at least 154 cases in 34 states. The agency advised pet owners to avoid feeding their dogs any pig ear treats, and recommended that retailers stop selling them.
