Dogs have a complex respiratory system that allows them to breathe properly and maintain their bodily functions. The respiratory system of a dog includes the nose, mouth, trachea, bronchi, and lungs. Dogs breathe in air through their nose and mouth, which then passes through the trachea and into the lungs. The lungs are responsible for the exchange of gases, where oxygen is absorbed and carbon dioxide is expelled.
What Happens When a Dog Inhales Water?
When a dog inhales water, it can lead to water in their lungs, which is a serious medical condition. This is known as pulmonary edema, which occurs when the lungs fill with fluid. The lungs become unable to function properly, and the dog’s breathing becomes labored. Pulmonary edema can be life-threatening if not treated promptly.
Common Causes of Water Inhalation in Dogs
Dogs can inhale water while swimming or playing in water. This is particularly common in dogs that are not strong swimmers, or those that have underlying medical conditions that affect their respiratory system. Other causes of water inhalation in dogs include near-drowning incidents, exposure to high humidity levels, and aspiration of vomit or gastric contents. Dogs with heart disease or kidney disease are also more prone to developing pulmonary edema.
