What is Kennel Cough?
Kennel cough, also known as canine infectious tracheobronchitis, is a highly contagious respiratory disease that affects dogs of all ages and breeds. It is caused by a combination of bacterial and viral infections and can occur in dogs that have been exposed to crowded or stressful environments, such as boarding kennels, dog shows, grooming facilities, and animal shelters. Kennel cough can cause inflammation of the trachea and bronchi, leading to coughing, gagging, and hacking. In severe cases, it can lead to pneumonia or other respiratory complications.
Transmission of Kennel Cough
Kennel cough is transmitted through airborne droplets that are released when an infected dog coughs or sneezes. The disease can also be spread through direct contact with contaminated surfaces, such as food and water bowls, toys, and bedding. Dogs that are in close proximity to each other, such as in a kennel or daycare setting, are at the highest risk of contracting kennel cough. Puppies, senior dogs, and dogs with weakened immune systems are also more susceptible to the disease.
