This dog is a sporty and spirited dog who is very devoted to his master. He is considered a very popular family dog. This breed of dog has silky-soft, wheat-colored fur, which gives this dog its name and is fairly easy to care for.
Care
Irish Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers shown at shows are usually trimmed to shape, leaving the ‘trim’ – which is the hair on the feet, neck, chest, and belly – longer. However, the original Irish standard discourages an overly “trimmed” look. In any case, a well-groomed specimen loses very little hair.
Temperament
He’s a dog who’s fun for everyone. The Irish Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is very devoted to its owner and is a versatile companion. It is suitable both as a sports companion for cycling, jogging or dog sports, as well as a persistent playmate for children or a cautious watchdog. Either way, the soft-coated Irish Terrier values the presence of its family very much and is therefore not suitable as a farm dog.
Upbringing
Like all other dogs, a Wheaten Terrier has to learn what he can and can’t do. Being very intelligent, these dogs are generally very quick to grasp what is being asked of them. The terriers have an honest character and should be treated accordingly. This dog does not like a strong hand or being handled too harshly.
Compatibility
Soft-Coated Wheaten Terriers are usually affectionate with children and get along well with other dogs. If properly socialized from a young age, cats usually don’t have any problems either.
Movement
Wheaten Terriers are active dogs who are quiet indoors when given plenty of outdoor exercises where they can run around to their heart’s content. These dogs are exceptionally good at various dog sports, such as agility tests or fly-ball. If the exercises are not varied enough, the terriers quickly lose their enthusiasm.
