Insect Bite In The Dog

Unlike humans, insect bites rarely cause problems in dogs, although unfortunately many dogs enjoy catching insects.

Symptoms

  • If a dog on a walk suddenly flinches or yelps and then licks a spot or rubs its head with its paw, an insect bite should be suspected. It is best to calm the dog down and then try to locate the sting site (with bee stings you can often still find the stinger, which should then be pulled out with your fingers or tweezers). If you have the opportunity, you should cool the area immediately and prevent the dog from licking.
  • In most cases, however, an insect bite can only be suspected as the cause after the fact, because, for example, the dog’s head or paw (the two most affected locations) swells or lameness occurs.
  • If the head swells, a veterinarian should be consulted immediately, since it can be assumed that the dog was bitten in the mouth. The swelling could also affect the throat area and then become life-threatening for the dog. The vet has the ability to prescribe medication that will stop the allergic reaction and prevent the swelling from progressing. In extreme emergencies, the animal can be anesthetized and ventilated by intubation.

Preventive

the following things need to be considered:

  • A dog should be prevented from snapping at flying insects

Caution: throwing treats that the dog is supposed to catch from the air can also support snatching prey

  • Have the nests of biting insects professionally removed from your own home or garden

Caution: there are bumblebee and wasp species that have soil nests (prevent the dog from digging there)

  • Wet food should not be left lying around where biting insects have access
