How to Teach Your Cat to “Sit” With the Clicker

If you want to teach your cat a simple trick like “sit”, you can combine this with the clicker. Start training with a quiet minute and be patient for a few days until the command is right.

Before you can teach your cat tricks like “sit” to click, your cat must already be familiar with the basic principles of clicker training. Now all you need is some patience, time, a quiet room to practice, some cat treats, and the usual clicker supplies.

Rehearse “Sit”: How to Start

Be sure to pick a good time to start training. Your cat should be focused on you and want to play. Clicker training with a velvet paw does not work through coercion – it should be fun and it is important that your cat is motivated. But how do you get the cat to sit down?

Cat Snack & Clicker Signal

Now use a trick to get the cat to look up because, in order to be able to do this better, it usually sits down. By holding a cat treat over your inquisitive cat, you’re more likely to get him to sit down so you can focus on what’s going on above him from that perspective. While holding the treat, say “sit.” Just as your cat sits, a click and a treat follow.

After a few days of repeating this exercise from time to time, try it without the treat and just use the signal word and the clicker. If that still doesn’t work, practice a little more with snacks and don’t lose patience too quickly: sometimes it takes a little time for the cat to understand what is being asked of him.
