In order for the Chihuahua to accept the baby, there are a number of things you can do before the birth. If the dog has not been properly trained or has already developed bad habits, the coming months should be used to work on all problems. If you have the feeling that you cannot cope with this on your own, please use a dog school or a trainer.
Ranking
Hierarchy relationships should be clarified and excessive jealousy towards other family members must not be tolerated. Practice with the dog taking toys or food away from him.
Take Privileges
If you would like to declare the children’s room a dog-free zone, also expel him from this room before the birth and use a baby gate so that he cannot sneak in. If you want to take privileges away from him, such as sleeping in your bed (because that’s where the baby will sleep later), start doing so early enough so he doesn’t associate the loss with the baby’s arrival.
Baby Accessories
If you already have baby accessories at home, put them up in the apartment. A baby bouncer, bassinet, or stroller can be shown to him. You can even take the latter with you on walks to familiarize the dog with the future vehicle.
The Smell of the Baby
When the baby is born, please do not bring a full diaper home. A worn romper suit or socks would be better. So he gets to know the smell a little bit.
Don’t Neglect the Chihuahua
When mother and child come home, the Chihuahua may first be greeted extensively. Then he can sniff the new earthling while you hold the baby in your arms.
Please never leave the baby alone with the Chihuahua. You can make baby dog moments positive when there is a little treat when you are together and he sniffs the baby or lies/sits with you.
Having a baby is an exciting and stressful time. Since the Chihuahua can unintentionally be neglected. Try to keep the four-legged friend’s usual routine as much as possible so that he does not get jealous and also plan in times that are exclusive to the four-legged friend.
