The Legendary Mare: Zenyatta

Zenyatta was a Thoroughbred mare who won 19 consecutive races in a career that spanned from 2007 to 2010. She was known for her distinctive personality and her ability to come from behind and win races in dramatic fashion. Zenyatta was also the first mare to win the Breeders’ Cup Classic, a feat that had never been achieved before. She retired with a record of 20 wins in 22 starts and was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 2016.

The Great War Horse: Sgt. Reckless

Sgt. Reckless was a Mongolian mare who was trained to carry ammunition for the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. She carried over 9,000 pounds of ammunition during the battle of Outpost Vegas, making 51 trips up and down the hill under enemy fire. She also carried wounded soldiers to safety and was even known to seek out wounded Marines on her own. Sgt. Reckless became a national hero and was promoted to the rank of staff sergeant. She was awarded two Purple Hearts and other military honors, and her story has been memorialized in books, statues, and a movie.
