While a cat is in heat, pregnancy can occur. Pregnancy can usually be determined after about three weeks. The safest way for the vet to do this is with an ultrasound. You should be careful when touching yourself: you could injure your pregnant cat or the kittens. However, enlarged and pink-colored teats are a good indicator of pregnancy.
Pregnancy: This Happens in the Womb
However, the embryo in the belly of the pregnant cat develops much earlier: the cell divides for the first time two to three days after fertilization. The daughter cells continue to divide. After about two weeks, the resulting embryo nests in the uterus. At this point, it is only about two by three millimeters in size. After four weeks of pregnancy, all of the kitten’s organs and body parts are present, at least in their initial form. A cat’s pregnancy lasts about 63 to 65 days in total.
Pregnant Cat Needs Rest & Plenty of Food
It is important that you leave the expectant mother cat alone as much as possible. You should give her as much privacy as possible, especially shortly before the birth. Because she will probably try to build “nests” in which she can give birth to her young.
During the entire pregnancy, it is important that the cat gets enough and, above all, high-quality food. Your need for nutrients such as calcium and vitamin A is now particularly high.
