Healthy Dog Nutrition: When Dry Food Can Be Used as a Healthy Fomplete Feed

For many dog owners, dry food is the easiest and most convenient form of dog nutrition. It can also be a particularly healthy feeding solution. At least that is the case if you pay attention to the right ingredients and the right type of preparation, such as cooking meat juice. What the latter is all about and what characterizes healthy dry dog food is discussed in this article. A healthy diet is just as important for dogs as it is for people.

Dry Food as a Particularly Practical Feeding Solution

When it comes to choosing the right food for your dog, many pet owners quickly opt for dry food. They are often guided by practical considerations: dry dog food is easy to dose and can be stored for a long time. In addition, dry food for dogs with a particularly high proportion of fresh meat is now also available. This offers suitable nutrition for both the wire-haired dachshund and all other dog breeds.

Dry Food is not Just Dry Food.

However, it should be noted that not all dry food is the same. Undoubtedly, all complete dry dog foods are practical and long-lasting. They are also more balanced than what used to be the practice of feeding dogs leftovers. Nevertheless, there are big differences in dry dog food. These are particularly related to the ingredients and the type of preparation.

In order to feed your own dog healthily, it is therefore important to deal with the ingredients and preparation methods of dry dog food. This is the only way to offer your pet a truly balanced and healthy diet.

By the way: whether wet food, dry food or even self-prepared meals are used is mostly irrelevant. After all, all types of feeding are suitable for giving your dog a healthy and balanced diet. Of course, this only applies if the feed contains sufficient amounts of macronutrients such as fats and proteins as well as micronutrients such as vitamins and minerals. If this is the case, a “convenient” dry food can also be ideal for feeding your dog healthily.

Good Dog Food Cannot Always be Recognized by the Price

More than 10 million dogs live in German households. All of them depend on a balanced and needs-based diet for a healthy and long life. Of course, most dog owners are aware of this and go to great lengths to ensure that their food is of high quality. But how exactly can you determine whether dry dog food is healthy and balanced? Is it enough just to look at the price and prefer expensive to cheap food?

It Depends on the Ingredients

Whether dry dog food is healthy and of high quality does not depend solely on its price. Rather, it depends on what the food is made of and how it was made. It can happen that even a rather cheap feed contains high-quality ingredients. It is also possible that the preferred meat juice cooking method was used to produce an inexpensive feed. Thus, the price of the feed cannot initially provide any information about the feed quality.

Instead, to get a first impression of the feed quality, it is important to pay attention to the ingredients of the feed. In this country, these must always be stated on the packaging of the dog food. A look at the list of ingredients helps to get a first impression.

If the list of ingredients shows high-quality protein sources such as fresh meat as the main component of the feed, it can usually be regarded as high-quality. If the feed also contains sufficient amounts of vitamins and trace elements, this is enough for a good first impression. Carbohydrates, on the other hand, should not be the main component of dog food. For a sufficient energy supply, however, they should be contained to a small extent. Properly prepared dry food is also healthy and balanced.

This Should be in a Good Dog Food

As already seen, high-quality dog food can be fed in wet, dry and self-prepared form. The ingredients that make up the feed are more important than the dosage form. After all, the food must provide the dog with all the micro-and macronutrients that are important to it, regardless of how it is administered. A healthy, needs-based diet is just as important for dogs as a balanced diet for humans.

In order to be able to offer the animal all vital micro and macronutrients, dog owners should pay particular attention to the following feed ingredients:

  • High-quality fresh meat as a supplier of valuable proteins.
  • To a small extent, well-tolerated gluten-free cereals, vegetables or fruit as carbohydrate sources
  • High-quality oils (e.g. salmon oil) and vitamins

Where are the High-Quality Ingredients?

If the list of ingredients shows a high proportion of fresh meat first, it can be a high-quality and healthy feed. It should be noted, however, that the quality of the feed is not solely based on the processed ingredients. The way the feed is made is also important. This is due to the fact that the healthy ingredients of individual ingredients are only preserved if they have been processed gently. They are only available to the dog in their entirety later on if they are processed gently, such as cooking meat juice.

Meat Juice Cooking Distinguishes High-Quality Dry Dog Food

Many “conventional” dry dog foods are made using what is known as an extrusion process. This means: low-nutrient meat flour or other animal proteins in dried form are cooked into a kind of dough with the addition of water and at high temperatures. The dough is then shaped using pressure and then machine dried. The problem here, however, is that the feed produced in this way has little natural flavour due to the lack of fresh meat or only a very small amount of it. To be accepted by the dog, it often has to be provided with flavour enhancers and similar additives. Together with other factors, these often lead to intolerance.

Fresh Meat Gently Cooked

For high-quality dry food with a high proportion of fresh meat, on the other hand, the so-called meat juice cooking method is used. High-quality fresh meat is cooked slowly and at low temperatures in its own meat juices without the addition of water. As a result, particularly nutrient-rich dog food can be produced, which is characterized by good tolerability. In addition, dry food prepared using this method is particularly popular with dogs because of its natural taste. If you want to offer your animal a natural and tasty meal, you should pay particular attention to the preparation using meat juice cooking. In this way, health, taste and practical feeding can be easily combined with dry food.
