How exactly did dogs evolve from wolves? Long ago, wolves hunted the remains of predators, getting ever closer to humans and their decks. Gradually, the wolves became friendly and produced offspring that were even more comfortable around humans. Eventually, wolves evolved into dogs and became man’s best friend.
Where Do Dogs Come from?
There’s some debate about the region that domesticated dogs originated from – Africa, East Asia, Europe, Mongolia, or Siberia. Research showed that the early dogs in Africa descended from dogs in the Middle East. It also showed that the geographic distribution of dogs did not always coincide with the same patterns of human migration.
The lack of evidence for the precise regional origins of dogs leaves more questions than answers. Why can’t scientists agree? Unfortunately, canine DNA is a confusing and complicated topic.
The Domestication of Dogs and Rabies
There are an estimated 900 million dogs in the world2, some of whom are pets while others are insane or homeless. More than 59,000 people die from rabies each year.3 The vast majority of these deaths are due to dog bites, and most of these are from dogs that are feral or homeless because they do not receive their annual vaccinations.
That’s partly why it’s so important that we spay and neuter our dogs so we can get dogs off the streets and into homes where they can be taken to the vet for their vaccinations yearly. The greater the domestication of dogs, the more deaths we will have from rabies.
