Originating in Switzerland, the Entlebucher Sennenhund is the smallest of the four Sennenhund breeds. It appreciates all activities and must therefore be employed accordingly. With a sensitive and consistent upbringing and sufficient activity, he is also suitable for dog beginners.

Origin and history

The Entlebucher Sennenhund comes from the Entlebuch, a valley in the area of the cantons of Lucerne and Berne, where it was primarily used as herding, herding, and guard dog. The first breed standard was only written in 1927, since then it has been purebred. The attractive, tri-color dog isn’t very common, but it’s gaining popularity as a happy family pet.

Appearance

The Entlebucher Sennenhund is a medium-sized, compactly built dog with a slightly elongated format. The long and powerfully built back is striking. The ears are hanging and set high. The tail is also hanging and straight, in rare cases shortened bobtails occur.

Like all Swiss Mountain Dogs, it is tri-colored. The basic color is black with reddish-brown and white markings that are as symmetrical as possible. The fur is stock-haired with a short, hard, and glossy top coat and a dense undercoat.

Nature

The Entlebucher Sennenhund is a lively, tireless, spirited dog that needs a lot of activity and exercise. Dog sports activities – such as agility, track work, or popular sports – are also ideal for the agile, docile dog.

The Entlebucher Sennenhund is affectionate towards its family and rather suspicious towards strangers, it also only reluctantly tolerates other male dogs in his territory. He is very alert and is also known to bark happily.

As a working dog, it is used to acting independently and on its initiative. Therefore, he needs a consistent and empathetic upbringing and clear leadership, otherwise, he will take over the command.

The robust guy loves to be outdoors and is therefore not suitable for a small apartment or life in the city. With a corresponding workload, the Entlebucher Sennenhund is a friendly, loyal and lovable family companion dog of compact size. The short coat is easy to care for.
