Does my dog suffer from reflux?

Introduction: Understanding Reflux in Dogs

Reflux in dogs is a common digestive disorder that can cause discomfort and pain in your furry companion. Reflux, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), occurs when the contents of the stomach flow back into the esophagus. This can happen when the muscles at the end of the esophagus, the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), become weak or relax abnormally. If not managed properly, reflux can lead to serious health complications in dogs.

Symptoms of Reflux in Dogs

The most common symptom of reflux in dogs is regurgitation, which is the involuntary return of undigested food from the stomach to the mouth. Other symptoms include vomiting, excessive drooling, gagging, and swallowing difficulties. Dogs with reflux may also experience weight loss, lethargy, and a decreased appetite. In severe cases, reflux can lead to esophagitis, an inflammation of the esophagus, or aspiration pneumonia, a lung infection caused by inhaling vomit.

Causes of Reflux in Dogs

Several factors can contribute to the development of reflux in dogs. One of the most common causes is a weakened LES, which can be due to genetics, aging, or certain medical conditions. Other factors that can increase the risk of reflux include obesity, a diet high in fat or protein, and certain medications such as corticosteroids and NSAIDs. Stress and anxiety can also trigger reflux in some dogs. In some cases, reflux can be a symptom of an underlying medical condition, such as a hiatal hernia or a tumor in the esophagus.
