Cat Ears: Why Regular Checks are Important?

Cat ears are not only very sensitive but also require care. That’s why you should check your velvet paw’s ears regularly and let a vet keep an eye on them from time to time.

Cat ears have a lot to do every day: they listen to even the slightest of sounds, turn in almost every direction, and have to be constantly alert. That is why they are so sensitive: They have to react to the smallest stimuli because, in the wild, hunting success or even their own life often depends on it. Even if your house tiger is listening to other things these days, you should never neglect the care of its ears.

Right Care

When your velvet paw grooms itself, the sensitive cat ears are of course involved. As a rule, a cat owner does not have to do much to care for their ears. However, it is still important to regularly look into your house tiger’s ears. If you check your cat’s ears regularly, you can prevent dirt from causing inflammation or other diseases, for example. Healthy cat ears are clean, dry, and odorless.

If you notice dirt or residue on the outside of the cat’s ears, more precisely on the auricles, you can remove them yourself with a damp cloth. The situation is different with dirt in the inner ear. Due to the high risk of injury, the inside of the ear should only be cleaned by a veterinarian.

Mite Infestation in Cat Ears

If you discover more black spots on your cat’s ears, alarm bells should ring in every cat lover. It could be mites. If your animal also scratches and shakes itself frequently, this is another signal that your velvet paw is dealing with the small parasites. Now even the best care doesn’t help anymore: You should urgently make an appointment with the vet. This is also the first point of contact if you discover secretion escaping in the cat’s ear – usually a symptom of inflammation. Recognized early enough and professionally cared for, the house tiger will soon be able to perk up its curious ears again.
