When is a cat beginner friendly?
Which cats are real beginner cats cannot be answered in general terms, because every person is different. A young family looking to give a home to a kitty for the first time is more likely to prefer a hardy, lively animal that gets along well with children.
Seniors who bring a house tiger for company usually want a kitten that is as calm and cuddly as possible with little urge to move. Then especially these cat breeds recommended, which are particularly cuddly.
And then there is the question of how much effort you want, can, or want to put into it: cats with short hair require less care and are therefore particularly suitable for beginners. But there are also newcomers to cats who really enjoy brushing their fluffy fur.
Five cat breeds for beginners
British Shorthair (BKH)
The British Shorthair, also called BKH, is the more comfortable, but quite similar alternative to the European Shorthair. She has a short, easy-care coat. Her body is somewhat rounder and more compact than that of the EKH. And she brings along a particularly enchanting quality: she is one of the cats with the most beautiful eyes.
Russian Blue
A beautiful blue-grey coat is the characteristic of this cat breed. The kitties captivate with their intelligent, calm, and at the same time playful nature. The elegant house tiger is rather reserved towards strangers. The Russian Blue needs a regular daily routine. Their short coat is easy to care for.
Siamese cat
Like the Maine Coon, the Siamese cat is the dog among the cats. The beautiful blue-eyed animals are social and communicative. Their lively yet good-natured temperament makes them good family cats.
Persian
Are you a quiet, easy-going person for whom looks are very important? Great! With the Persian cat, you have found your dream partner! The Persian cat is a sublime beauty that feels most comfortable as a sofa tiger. Their long, silky coat requires a lot of grooming. But see it in a positive light: you can also strengthen the bond with your cat by grooming your pet.
Ragdoll
The fur of the ragdoll is also cuddly. The cuddly tigers are people-related and friendly. The peaceful, good-natured animal appreciates the company and fits perfectly into the family. Along with the Maine Coon, the semi-long-haired kitty is one of the five largest cat breeds in the world.
The right beginner cat for everyone
Most pedigree cats have been bred to be kept indoors for generations. They are mostly peaceful companion animals that fit well into the home environment.
But here too there are differences in suitability and temperament. As not all beginners are the same, above you will find a selection of cat breeds for different needs: for individuals and couples who prefer a quiet atmosphere, but also for families with children who like things to be a little more lively.
These breeds are not beginner cats
The question of which cat breeds are rather unsuitable for beginners is easier to answer: This includes all hybrids, i.e. crosses between domestic cats and wild cats, with a high proportion of wild cats. Highly bred animals with an increased susceptibility to genetic defects are generally also unsuitable.
In general, an animal from a reputable breeder is a better choice than a kitty with a poor health condition that may be bought over the Internet. (Please never do that!).
If you suffer from a cat hair allergy, then completely different selection criteria play a role. These cat breeds are very suitable for allergy sufferers.
A beginner cat from the farm?
The short-haired court cat is, so to speak, the prototype from which almost all cat breeds ultimately descend. The ancestors of all house tigers once lived on a farm in a rural environment. There they fulfilled their task as mouse and rat catchers and determined the day and night routine independently.
Farm cats are usually loving and very affectionate creatures if they get used to people in time. However, not all kitties from the farm are suitable as pure indoor cats. They often have a pronounced urge for freedom and generally lively and active nature.
These cats, therefore, need sufficient exercise, both physically and mentally. A house with a garden is ideal for them – or a person who spends a lot of time with them. Aside from these claims, farm cats are hardy and easy to care for.
