The Boston Terrier was first bred in the USA towards the end of the 19th century and was initially called “Boston Bulldog”. The forefathers of this breed were English terriers and bulldogs, later also French bulldogs were crossed. The new breed was presented for the first time at a show in Boston in 1878 and immediately delighted the professional world. Because of this memorable event, the Kennel Club named the dog “Boston Terrier” in 1891. At the beginning of the 20th century, the first Boston puppies came to Europe. To this day, however, the breed has not been as enthusiastic as in the USA on this continent.

General Appearance

The Boston Terrier is a lively, highly intelligent, short-haired dog with a compact and strong body and a short head and bobtail. The coat color variants accepted are brindle, black, and “seal” (black with a reddish tinge), each with white markings.

Behavior and temperament

The Boston Terrier is a friendly, energetic dog. According to the breed standard, he has excellent facilities and a particularly high level of intelligence. In fact, his ancestors inherited only the best of themselves: temperament, kindness, courage, and intelligence. But the Boston Terrier is not only very popular because of its compact appearance: despite – or because of it? – due to its high level of intelligence, it forgives its humans for some educational mistakes and is never resentful or malicious. The Boston Terrier is a friendly and dependable companion who gets along well with people and animals alike. Because it is so uncomplicated, it is also suitable for inexperienced owners.

Need for employment and physical activity

He is a persistent companion dog and likes to go on long hikes as well as leisurely walks. He will also be enthusiastic about dog sports if they give him the chance to take part in such courses. For example, Boston Terriers can achieve real feats of dog dancing.

Upbringing

He is easy to train, loves to learn, and learns quickly. Love and consistency are the magic words that drive the Boston Terrier to top performance. You shouldn’t use harshness, because the Boston Terrier is very sensitive and can be permanently disturbed by wrong treatment.

Maintenance

The coat should be brushed with a grooming glove from time to time. Eyes and ears should be checked and cared for regularly.

Disease Susceptibility / Common Diseases

Boston Terriers are very sensitive to heat. The short nose can cause breathing problems. Therefore, when choosing a breeder, make sure that healthy breeding is important in the house.

Did you know?

The Boston Terrier is called “Terrier”, but it isn’t one. He belongs to the “mastiff-like” dogs.
