Domestic cats usually give birth alone and without problems. Birth disorders are most likely to be observed in pedigree cats.
Causes
A rough distinction is made between two causal complexes. On the one hand, the problem can come from the mother cat, for example, if she has a too narrow pelvis or is not in labor, on the other hand, puppies that are too large, deformed, or dead can cause difficulties at birth.
Symptoms
If a puppy is not born after an hour of contractions, the cat seems exhausted, has a fever or you notice a foul-smelling vaginal discharge, you must take the animal to the vet as soon as possible.
Measures
Despite all your worries, you should remain calm. Some birth disorders are caused by stress. Cat births often take a long time, so you have to be patient. The best thing to do is to note the onset of the pressing contractions, watch the labor from afar and make sure you don’t intervene too soon.
Prevention
If you have any symptoms of illness during pregnancy, you should see your vet immediately. Eating the right diet is also important – overweight cats have far more problems giving birth than slim ones.
