Be Careful With Plants That are Poisonous to Cats

Beware of plants that are poisonous to cats. Dangers lurk both in the apartment and in the garden. Also, see our list of plants poisonous to cats for a brief overview of the most common poisonous plants.

When purchasing a new plant for the garden or apartment, it is not always clear whether it is a non-toxic plant species. The degree of toxicity varies greatly between plants. If the cat only becomes nauseous when eating a plant, other toxins or poison in large quantities can pose a serious threat to the velvet paw’s life and limb – especially if the poisoning is not recognized and treated as such.

Poisoning by Plants in Cats

Cats cannot tolerate some substances that humans can easily tolerate. Therefore, especially in a household with pets, you have to be careful that they do not have access to poisonous plants. How the cat ingested the substance is also decisive for the degree of poisoning.

Tea tree oil is one of the other toxic botanicals that can cause symptoms of poisoning in cats. Cats also like to drink stale flower water. This can contain toxic substances from the rotting of the flowers – so never let your cat drink from it. You should also not use foliar polish or pesticide sprays on your plants or flowers. This can also lead to poisoning in your darling.

In case of Suspicion: Consult a Veterinarian

Symptoms of poisoning include vomiting and diarrhea, increased salivation, tremors, restlessness, staggering, paralysis, particularly narrow or wide pupils, or strong excitement. If you suspect poisoning, take your pet to a veterinarian immediately.
