Understanding the Gait of Racking Horses
The racking horse is a breed that is known for its unique gait, called the "rack." The rack is an ambling gait that is smooth, fast, and effortless. It is a four-beat gait where the horse moves its legs in a lateral pattern, with the front and hind legs on the same side moving forward and backward simultaneously. This gait is different from the traditional dressage gaits, which include the walk, trot, canter, and sometimes the passage and piaffe. Dressage horses are trained to perform these gaits with maximum collection, extension, and impulsion. In contrast, racking horses are trained to perform the rack, which is a natural gait that requires minimal collection and impulsion. The rack is a comfortable gait for both the horse and rider, allowing them to cover long distances without much effort. However, it may not be suitable for dressage, which demands precise and varied gaits in a controlled environment.
