Anxious Cat: Interpreting Body Language Correctly

A shy and fearful cat communicates its fears to its humans primarily through body language. This is how you interpret the communication of your house tiger correctly.

Fear can manifest itself in a cat through several behavioral traits. The body language is varied: the most important indicator is the tail. If the house tiger literally pulls in its tail – i.e. between its hind legs – this is a clear sign of particular shyness or even fear. You can expect the cat to retreat quickly.

But not only the tail but also the fur reveals the anxious cat. If your house cat’s hair is fluffed up, this also indicates an extreme feeling of insecurity and fear. However, this body language can also be caused by cold.

In general, cats also tend to run away and hide when they are scared. This search for protection is a natural reaction to situations, people, or animals that are new to the house cat and that it may not feel comfortable with. A case in point here is the fear of the cat carrier. The frightened cat doesn’t want to go in, fights back, and flees.

The cat’s ears are also an important body language tool. If they are tight, this can indicate fear or aggressive behavior. If the velvet paw is actually afraid of something, it will quickly run away.

Hissing is also a reaction to fear. Especially when the anxious cat hisses and backs away at the same time, the body language is clear.
