The American Foxhound is the result of crossing different breeds, including French hounds and pack hounds, English Foxhounds, and German scent hounds in the 19th century. The variations of this breed are correspondingly diverse. In the United States, it is particularly popular with hunters, but the breed is rarely found outside of the United States.
General Appearance
The American Foxhound is a large dog that appears very muscular and strong. While its close relative, the English Foxhound, is still primarily bred for hunting today, the American variant is seen more as a show dog and is slightly smaller and lighter built.

The American Foxhound is a very idiosyncratic, lively, and independent dog. He is also characterized by great courage and bravery. Although he has a strong character and is friendly within his family, he is not suitable as a pure companion dog, but should definitely be used for hunting. The Foxhound feels most comfortable when he is allowed to be a member of a large pack of dogs.
