Keeshond is the largest dog of the Spitz family. Its ancestor is considered to be a peat dog that lived in the Stone Age. Keeshond is native to Holland and Germany, where it was first identified as a separate species. This breed was especially popular in the Netherlands; sailors and boatmen started them to guard barges. Maybe that’s why these dogs love to swim. They were also used to guard houses, guard and graze livestock, and even for hunting.
It is an energetic and agile dog with a lively temperament. Keeshond is confident and independent, very attached to the owner, and even capable of being jealous.
