Here are 9 important tips to consider if you are a first-time Beagle owner.
#1 Puppy-proof your home
First-time owners of Beagle puppies can hardly imagine what such small dogs can do. And they are not aware of all the things they can do wrong themselves.
Beagles are curious and adventurous, which is why we love them so much. And they explore their surroundings by putting things in their mouths and then swallowing them often. Even in the farthest corners of your home, you will find things you never knew existed. Her beagle will find her!
Unfortunately, they also swallow things they shouldn't have in their stomachs. Puppy safety is similar to child safety. Remove anything they can reach and then chew, break, or swallow.
Here are some things you need to keep in mind to make your house puppy-proof:
Walk around each room and pick up anything off the floor that your puppy might put in his mouth.
Keep all electrical cords and outlets out of his reach.
Keep the trash can closed, preferably in one of the base cabinets in your kitchen, which you should lock with a childproof lock. Beagles love to dig in and eat trash.
Secure cabinets and drawers on the lower level with child safety locks. Beagles are very adept at opening doors.
Keep the toilet and bathroom doors closed.
DO NOT leave medicines or keys on the tables.
#2 Socialize your Beagle as much and as early as possible
Beagles are lovable and social dogs. You can get along with people of all ages. They get along with both other dogs and cats. However, to make them so compatible with everyone, they need to be socialized with all sorts of stuff and animals from a young age.
Socialization in the canine world means exposing them to different people, animals, sounds, and smells and associating them with positive things. This will ensure that your Beagle does not develop an anxious, shy, or aggressive personality.
Here are some things you need to do:
Introduce your dog to new people from time to time. Ask your friends and family members to visit you more often. Expose your dog to all types of people: people with beards and/or glasses, people with different types of clothing, and children of different ages.
Date and meet up with all the pet owners you know. You can introduce dogs, cats, and other pets and allow your pup to interact with them. Take him to a nearby dog park or dog school where he can play with other dogs.
Take him to different places regularly. Go to the country, to the big city, and ride public transport.
Expose him to different types of smells. Take him outside and let him smell different things around.
Always remember to associate positive things with your dog when interacting with others. For example, ask your guests to give him a treat when he behaves correctly and praise him when your dog interacts calmly with other animals.
#3 Practice, practice, practice, repeat!
First-time Beagle owners in particular are often unaware of how stubborn, cheeky, mischievous, and stubborn these dogs can be. You have an independent mind that is full of curiosity.
Without training, it can be difficult to live with them peacefully and without problems. Above all, you must set clear rules and enforce them consistently.
