Nature and Temperament of the Treeing Walker Coonhound

Back when these dogs were used by settlers in America, they had only one job: to help secure life. The Treeing Walker Coonhound is a jack of all trades and was therefore essential to survival in early America.

Their main task was to help with the hunt, but over time they took on more and more tasks and protected the belongings, and provided skins and clothing.

The Treeing Walker Coonhound is a breed of dog that has always been around people from the beginning, as this breed has ensured everyday survival.

But when they could no longer take on this task, as industrialization progressed and people took on other jobs, the dog was no longer used for hunting but for sport. Therefore, there are many disciplines where the zeal to hunt these animals in sports can be applied.

The breed is characterized by its eagerness to hunt and its high urge to move. The Treeing Walker Coonhound were trained to hunt animals and the trees and bark there to indicate them to the hunter. This instinct shows that this is a very intelligent breed that can learn quickly.

Once the dogs have activated their hunting instincts, they rarely, or almost never, listen to a command from their owner. Therefore, always be careful when walking your dog!
Alert and able to protect you and your family, these dogs make hardy companions. Nevertheless, you should always make sure to give the dog enough exercise, because this is the only way to keep the dog in the right position.

However, always keep in mind that this is a hunting dog. The instinct to hunt is innate and long established in breeding and will therefore likely start barking whenever he sees a squirrel or other animal and pulls on the leash.
